Non-Romantic Lessons from Romantic Comedies

An underrated and severely under appreciated film genre are those of romantic comedies and chick-flicks. Personally, I’m not a fan of the genre myself but some of these films are just undeniably good so don’t bash on chick-flicks just yet. They’re like a breath of fresh air after simmering in Oscar movies and thrillers.

More importantly, when you strip away the clichés and romance, what you’re left with is a great non-romantic lesson.

Here are some of my favourites:

It’s a Boy/Girl Thing

Walking in someone else’s shoes is difficult. We see faces everyday and assume we know the story behind them but we don’t. So ditch the holier-than-thou attitude.

You’ve Got Mail

  • Never judge a book by its cover, literally and figuratively. (I love the irony in the fact that the protagonists who are both in the book business constantly judge one another by their covers.)
  • While tigers have become endangered due to poaching , so too have independent bookstores due to commercialization. Going out of business is a headline to some and a heart breaker to others.
P.S I Love You

Good things sometimes come to an end and it may take some time before you realize that they are still yet to come.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

When going shopping, always ask yourself “Do I need this?” That is the mantra.

Why? Because the feeling of walking into a store and wanting to buy everything is real. You begin to justify your purchases in illogical ways just as Rebecca does. Shopaholism or technically known as compulsive buying disorder is an actual debt crippling addiction and if you want to read a first hand perspective of it, go here.

The Devil Wears Prada

  • Your boss can be a pain in the ass and an insufferable human being, turning you into someone you’re not. That doesn’t mean you have to let them.
  • Clothes and accesories are not just ‘stuff’, according to Miranda Priestly. ( I loved Meryl’s monologue.)
